I am sad to say that this morning when I went to get Steady from the pasture to give him his breakfast and he was three legged, head bobbing, dead lame. Whatever you want to call it, the horse that I have never take a lame step in the 2 1/2 years i have owned him is very obviously lame. It seems to be on the right hind there is a small amount of swelling and heat from the pastern to just above the fetlock. I am worried and sad but I am trying not to panic. He was perfectly fine when he was turned out last night. I have no idea what he did or how it happened. My internet service has been really crappy so I don't know when I will be back but please send prayers, thoughts, good vibes or soundness thoughts Steady's way.
Hopefully just an abscess!! Those tend to show up suddenly and are very painful, but thankfully not a big deal. Sending good thoughts your way!
ReplyDeleteAlso voting for the abscess option - fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteAwww, I hope that steady gets better soon, I am praying.

Did you rule out abscess? It sounds like one.
ReplyDeleteAnother vote for abscess, and sending good vibes your way! Don't take it too hard that he came up lame, anything can happen with the concrete-like ground they're living on right now!
ReplyDeleteFarrier was out this afternoon, he said he didn't see any signs of an abcess but that it would probably be too early to tell. He said just give him a call if i notice anything and he will come back out. He said he thought it might be in his hock. I am not convinced in any direction but am really thinking it is lower and somewhere around his fetlock. I am hoping he just tweaked something being silly on the hard ground. Thanks for the well wishes keep them coming. I hate to see my boy hurting.
ReplyDeleteHas he gotten any better or worse throughout the day? Weight bearing? Etc?
ReplyDeleteI am sending all my good thoughts your way Amy and hoping it is just a minor injury. Riva was right there 2 weeks ago - one day perfectly sound, next day 3 legged horse. I cried - so I definitely feel your pain.
ReplyDeleteWe immediately stall rested - Bute 2x's a day - wrapped with cold cast...and it worked for Riva. I did feel better after taking her in for an ultrasound - just to be sure there was not tendon damage.
Keep us posted!
Sounds exactly like the abscess Chrome just had. I'd never experienced one so I was pretty panicked lol.
